The Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail offers a unique journey through the stunning landscapes of New Zealand's Mackenzie District.

Lake Pukaki to Twizel follows the section from either Tekapo to Pukaki or from Aoraki to Pukaki. Starting from the large car park in front of Lake Pukaki, cross State Highway 8 to access the purpose-built trail leading across the Pukaki Flats to Twizel. This route is well-marked and easily accessible for cyclists.

The main feature of this part of the ride is the expansive views of the Pukaki Flats, a region known for its vast, dry golden grasslands and big skies. This area is a quintessential part of the Mackenzie landscape, providing a scenic backdrop for the ride.

Exploring Twizel

After exiting the flats and recrossing State Highway 8 and following the purpose-built trail, cyclists will arrive in the town of Twizel. This town offers a variety of accommodation and dining options, making it an ideal place to rest and recharge. Twizel serves as a convenient overnight stop for those continuing their journey on the Alps 2 Ocean trail.

After reaching Twizel, the trail continues towards Lake Ōhau, offering further exploration of the region's natural beauty.
