The West Matukituki Track starts at the end of Wānaka Mount Aspiring Road. It takes about two hours of hiking through the National Park to reach the Aspiring Hut, where you can stay overnight. The hut is popular, so book in advance. The track is one of several stunning tracks in the Matukituki Valley northwest of Wānaka.
The walk is quite easy and can also be cycled. It takes you past views of alpine meadows, a glacier, waterfalls and the Matukituki River. You can extend the walk into a more challenging mountain tramp by venturing north up the valley below Mount Aspiring to French Ridge and the Liverpool Track or over the Cascade Saddle to the Dart Valley.
