Discovering Waitonga Falls on Mount Ruapehu
Located on Mount Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, Waitonga Falls is a surprising destination that rewards those who walk and clamber beyond the initial view. While the falls may initially appear as a gentle stream flowing over a cliff face 100 metres upstream, the real attraction lies in the hidden, smaller waterfalls that cascade around a large amphitheatre below. The sight of water flowing over vibrant green moss and lichen, contrasted with the colourful rock formations, is a stunning visual experience.
Discovering the Amphitheatre
From the Waitonga Falls Track, the view of the 39-metre falls is limited to the upper section, which is about 200 metres away. In addition, the water flows are generally relatively light.
To fully appreciate the falls, take the time to explore beyond the main track and up the stream. It is probably easier to keep your feet dry on the left-hand side, with a first objective of some large boulders in the stream. Next to the boulders, you'll see the first of the smaller falls, set against a vibrant green mossy backdrop. Cambering around the boulders takes you into the U-shaped amphitheatre with steep rock faces. Here, at least three streams converge from different directions, including the main one visible from the track, for a surprising and picturesque setting.
How to Get There
To reach the Waitonga Falls Track, head approximately 15 km up Ohakune Mountain Road from Ohakune. Parking is on the side of the road.
A bit further up the road, you will also find the 28 metre Mangawhero Falls (Golems Pool from LOTR). At the start of the road, check out the Rimu Walk, with its group of big ancient trees, right next to the town.
