Exploring Tora Road

Tora Road is a remote 13.4 km gravel road in the remote eastern side of the Wairarapa. It provides access to the coast at Manurewa Point, north of White Rock. Nearby is the North Tora Camping Area and Tora Recreation Reserve on the coast.

This route will lead you along the picturesque Awhea River and through the small communities of Little Tora, Heather Hills, Awhea, Manurewa Point and coastal beaches. As you travel, you'll encounter numerous cows and sheep, so it's important to drive cautiously on the gravel road, as the animals may not quickly move out of your path.

Tora Coastal Walk

Along the way, you'll find the entry point for the private Tora Coastal Walk. This three-day trek offers stunning views and a unique experience of the local landscape. Due to its popularity, it's advisable to book your spot a season or two in advance to ensure availability.

How to get there

To reach this scenic spot, starting from Martiborough, take Jellicoe Street, then White Rock Road for about 30 km to the intersection with Tora Road. Turn left onto Tora Road and continue to the coast.
