As you approach Westport from the south, a side road takes you to pretty Tauranga Bay and Cape Foulwind walkway. People surf in the bay, although I am not sure about sunbathing!
Park at the bay's north end to access the walkway to Cape Foulwind. It first heads up onto a cliff top overlooking a seal colony. There has been extensive native planting around the area, and you will probably see numerous weka, a native bird known for its tendency to sneak up and steal shiny objects for its nest. You can continue on to the lighthouse, about a two-hour return walk, but the best section is the first kilometre or so.
