Sawyer Burn Track starts at the same point as the Kidds Bush Nature Walk and the campsite. Access is along the metal Meads Rd from State Highway 6 on Lake Hāwea.
The track is much more strenuous than the nature walk and quickly climbs over 500 metres through beech forest until it opens out with fabulous views south over Lake Hāwea. As you exit the forest, there is a relatively narrow ridge to the final short climb, but it only takes a few steps to pass over it.
It takes about an hour to this point, and you can continue to a hut (mostly flat open hiking) for another hour or so. But it’s the section through the forest, which was rich with native fungi when we did it, and then the superb views that make for an excellent walk.
