The Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain Walks, including the well-maintained walk to a high point on the side of the mountain, are popular trails for views of Wānaka and the Matukituki Valley. The more rugged hike to the top of Rocky Mountain (a total climb of 400 metres) is a bit more effort on an often rough tramping track. However, it takes only half the time you need for Roys Peak.
Follow the track to the viewpoint above Diamond Lake. Shortly after, the track offers a choice of left or right on a loop over the top. The right side also gives you access to another great easterly viewpoint over Lake Wanaka for a modest additional climb. Whichever way you go, there will be some short, rough sections. Once on the top, it is easy rolling grass and tussock lands, with a peak at 775 metres and 360-degree views over the region.
