The journey from Port Waikato to Waikaretu is a captivating drive through diverse landscapes, offering a unique glimpse of New Zealand's natural beauty. This route is particularly appealing for its limestone rock formations and the chance to see the famous Weathertop location from the Lord of the Rings films.

Scenic Highlights Along the Way

As you leave Port Waikato, take a sharp right onto Port Waikato Waikaretu Road, winding through narrow sections and transitioning from sealed to unsealed. The route climbs approximately 100 metres, revealing stunning limestone formations. Some areas resemble mini canyons with streams running through them, providing a picturesque backdrop.

A notable highlight is the cliff-edge high point, where you can safely stop and take in the view. Although there is no road marking, Google Maps identifies this location as a viewpoint for Weathertop. While the Weathertop formation is visible, it is not immediately obvious among the other rock formations.

Seasonal Beauty

If you travel this route in early spring, you'll be treated to the sight of flowering kōwhai trees near the cliff edge. The vibrant yellow blossoms attract many tūī, adding a lively touch to the landscape.

How to Get There

To reach Port Waikato, take the Tuakau Bridge Port Waikato Road west from Tuakau Bridge, south of Tuakau and on the Waikato River. As you approach Port Waikato, stay left, and the road becomes Port Waikato Waikaretu Road.

At Port Waikato, explore the extensive dunes, while at Tuakau, you can check out the historic Alexandra Redoubt.
