Zealandia is one of the earliest native bird sanctuaries in New Zealand and the only one within a major city. It is a Wellington (and arguably NZ) must-do, with good populations of several endangered birds and tuatara. It is also a lovely walk through native bush regenerating around two old city water supply dams. Numerous boards describe the native plants, birds, and flowers, so it is also an outdoor education!
Zealandia has also influenced the locals to make Wellington safer for native birds. You will notice the scope of native bush regeneration throughout the hills around you.
Unusually, we find ourselves promoting a paid activity as there is an access fee. But this is a superb place to spend a few hours, and we are keen to support the bird sanctuaries.
Zealandia is in the suburb of Karori. From downtown Wellington, take Bown Street to Tinakore Road and head south. Tinakore becomes Glenmore Street as it passes the Botanic Gardens. Stay on Glenmore as it winds up the hill till you see Waiapu Road on the left. The main car park is at the end. Allow 7 minutes by car and a 50-minute walk.
