Wiremu Merito Reserve can be found on Old Te Whaiti Road. That is a rough forestry road that runs along the west side of the Whirinaki River from River Road towards Te Whaiti Road. After 3.7 km, you will reach Whirinaki Recreation Camp. The reserve is opposite the camp.
There are three short walking tracks, each requiring about 45 minutes to an hour. The connected Wiremu Merito Reserve Track and the Recreation Camp Lookout Track are on the west side of the road. These start with recovering forests but quickly access some superb big trees. Small panels also name and describe many of the native shrubs and trees. The view from the top of the lookout track is now blocked by forest regrowth.
A third track starts near the Recreation Camp and provides an easy loop walk through the native forest to the Whirinaki River. Swimming is more pleasant during summer.
