State Highway 5 heads into the Kaingaroa Forest on a high plateau before heading into the hills and mountain ranges that run from Wellington to East Cape. Shortly after entering these hills, there is a viewpoint for the Waipunga Falls.
This must be one of the prettiest waterfalls in New Zealand, and it is often posted on Instagram. There is a second waterfall (Waiarua Falls) that is only just visible to the left of the Waipunga Falls. Unfortunately, you can’t change the viewpoint and would need a drone for a better view of Waiarua Falls.
