Waimamaku Beach, also Kaikai Beach, is a little-known but stunning Kauri Coast surf beach on the Tasman Sea, between Waipoua Forest and the Hokianga. The easiest way to get there is to take Waimamaku Beach Road from State Highway 12. After you reach the end of this metal road, as the tide goes out, you can easily walk for 10 minutes or so along the side of the lagoon and river mouth to the beach.
The best place to hang out is the lagoon beside the beach. It is sandy and deep enough for a pleasant swim. You can explore around the dunes and along the coast in either direction.
Another more strenuous option is to hike from Hokianga Harbour to the Waimamaku River mouth and beach. The Waimamaku Coastal Track follows the rugged coastline from Arai Te Uru Recreation Reserve to the Waimamaku River. This route is historically significant, as it was the main route before roads were built. Allow 4 hours to walk the 10 km route, and it is best to have a car at each end.
