Te Anau Downs: Gateway to the Milford Track
Te Anau Downs is located at the northern end of Lake Te Anau. It is the main access point to the lake after departing Te Anau on the Te Anau Milford Highway (State Highway 94). This area is best known for being the boat access point from Boat Harbour to the famous Milford Track. Te Anau Downs is also a beautiful location, especially when the lake is calm.
A Glimpse into History and Scenic Views
At the main car park, a series of informative panels detail the region's development, highlighting the growth of the tourism industry around the Milford Track and access to Milford Sound. Te Anau Downs is particularly photogenic, with stunning views across the lake towards the Murchison and Stuart Mountains. For the best experience, try to visit earlier in the morning before the breeze disturbs the tranquil waters.
