Exploring the Tauherenikau Gorge Track

The Tauherenikau Gorge Track, located on the east side of the Remutaka Range in the Wairarapa, offers a unique hiking experience. Accessible from Bucks Road, approximately 8 km northeast of Featherston, this track provides a scenic adventure through the Tararua Forest. The highlight of this hike is the pristine river beach at the end, perfect for a picnic amidst mossy boulders and driftwood.

Navigating the Track

Starting from the car park and campsite, there are two track entrances. The "River Access" track is the recommended route, leading you on a zig-zag path up a hill to a high point of about 300 metres. From there, the trail descends into the gorge towards the river. The path is rugged, crossing streams and waterfalls, so sturdy hiking boots are essential for the three-hour return journey.

Wildlife and Scenic Highlights

The track is rich in wildlife, with kererū often landing nearby and the songs of tūī filling the air. Pīwakawaka frequently accompany hikers along the way. The real reward, however, is the serene river beach at the track's end. It's an ideal spot to relax and enjoy a picnic before making the return trek over the hill.

Unique River Experience

For those seeking an alternative return, a local hiker suggested using a blow-up floating device to drift back to the car park along the river currents. This leisurely float takes a couple of hours and is an excellent option for a summer afternoon.

Getting to the Tauherenikau Gorge Track

To reach the Tauherenikau Gorge Track from Wellington, take State Highway 2 through the Hutt Valley and over the Remutaka Range to Featherston. From Featherston, take Underhill Road northeast to the Bucks Road turnoff. Follow Bucks Road (gravel) to the car park and campsite.

There are many other options for exploration around the Wairarapa. In addition to other tracks in the Remutaka, nearby Martinborough is known for its wine and cafes, while places like Cape Palliser, White Rock and Tora are amongst the most remote coastal places in the North Island.
