Exploring Soldiers Track in Cambridge
Located in Cambridge, Soldiers Track offers a short, scenic loop walk that combines historical interest with river beauty. The track begins at Victoria Bridge, a structure dating back to the early 1900s, which stands approximately 50 metres above the Waikato River. Crossing the bridge provides stunning views of the river, both upstream and downstream.
Walking the Track
To start your journey, head south on Victoria Street from the Cambridge town centre towards Victoria Bridge. On the south side of the bridge, you'll find an information panel detailing its history. Nearby, the entrance to Soldiers Track is visible. As you follow the track, you'll pass through a mix of mature exotic trees and areas of native replanting, descending close to the riverbank.
The track eventually ascends back to the riverbank near Low-Level Bridge. Crossing this bridge offers another perspective of the Waikato River. After crossing, walk along the short metal road adjacent to the river, leading to a track on the north side. This section of the track is particularly photogenic and guides you back to the area below Victoria Bridge.
Returning to the Start
Previously, steps near Victoria Bridge allowed for a direct return to the road, but these may have been washed out. If they are still inaccessible, continue along the track to Dominion Avenue, then head west to reach the north end of Victoria Bridge. The entire walk takes approximately 40 minutes.
How to Get There
To reach Soldiers Track, begin at the Cambridge town centre on Victoria Street and walk south to Victoria Bridge. The entrance to the track is located near the information panel on the south side of the bridge.
