Exploring Rotokura Cable Bay

Rotokura Cable Bay is a captivating destination located just off State Highway 6, near the northern outskirts of Nelson. This bay is historically significant as the landing site for the first trans-Tasman telegraph cable in 1876. Today, it continues to play a role in communication as the site for a fibre optic cable connecting the North and South Islands. The bay is distinguished by a pebble beach and a boulder bank that links the mainland to the striking, emerald-green Pepin Island. Behind this natural link lies the Wakapuaka Estuary.

Activities and Attractions

Rotokura Cable Bay provides picnic facilities on the boulder bank, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely picnic. However, one of the main draws of the area is the opportunity to capture stunning photographs. The view across the boulder bank to Pepin Island is a popular shot among photographers.

For those interested in hiking, the Cable Bay Walkway begins at the southwest end of the boulder bank.
