The Remutaka Rail Trail is an 18 km section of the multi-day Remutaka Cycle Trail. It takes in the section through the Remutaka Ranges. In contrast, the multi-day track starts in Petone, runs up the Hutt Valley, passes through the Remutaka Ranges, and then heads south to the Wairarapa coast, terminating at the Orongorongo River mouth.
This rail trail section has a bit of everything: rugged, remote country with steep gorges, tunnels and a cool swing bridge. There is even the odd farm. It is easy to walk all or some of it as an option, starting from Kaitoke off SH2 in the Hutt Valley and finishing at Cross Creek in Wairarapa. From there, it is an easy 8km ride into Featherston. If you are walking and you want to just go as far as the tunnels, start from the Wairarapa side.
