Once upon a time, the only reason anyone went to Picton was to get on and off the Interislander and Bluebridge ferry services. It still has commercial port facilities and is the northernmost end of State Highway 1 and the main trunk railway in the South Island. But the town has become much more attractive. It is based around a beach and pretty reserve at the head of Picton Harbour, with a marina on the southeast side. Behind the reserve are several cafes and bars.
The harbour connects to Queen Charlotte Sound and is the jumping-off point for boating activity and access throughout the Marlborough Sounds. Various charter, boat hire, and water taxi options are available in front of the marina. Spectacular Queen Charlotte Drive and access to Port Underwood Road also start in Picton.
On the day, it had an almost tropical vibe, with blue skies, golden sand, palm trees, and green forest on the hills.
