Exploring Ngahopua Track and Its Scenic Views

Ngahopua Track is located along Lake Ōkataina Road, about halfway to Lake Ōkataina in the Rotorua region of the Bay of Plenty. This track is best known for its stunning views of the twin volcanic crater lakes of Rotongata and Rotoatua, which erupted approximately 3,500 years ago. The track's easy 50-minute walk also includes a section through a beautiful mature native rainforest.

Walking the Ngahopua Track

The Ngahopua Track is one of several connected short tracks that can be done as a loop, with two track entrances only 100 metres apart on Lake Ōkataina Road. You can park near either entrance.

Starting from the southern end, a mostly easy walk goes through recovering rainforest. After 300 metres, the track branches, with the Ngahopua Track turning north and a second loop track heading east. From here, the forest matures, and after 20 minutes, you will arrive at the south edge of the larger crater, Lake Rotoatua. This one is over 100 metres down to the lake, with a near sheer cliff from the viewpoint.

Continuing west for a few minutes takes you to the second smaller Lake Rotongata, with less steep sides, but just as deep. Be cautious as the lake drop-offs are not always protected by barriers, which is particularly important if you are with small children.

After the second lake, it takes about 10 minutes or so to walk to the road, which includes the best section of the old rainforest on the track.

Connecting Tracks and Extended Walks

Ngahopua Track connects with the Anaha Track, which in turn links to the Kepa Track, all situated on the east side of the road. These connections allow for extended walks if you wish to explore further. Additionally, several tracks begin near the Okataina Lodge and the Outdoor Education Centre. These include the short Te Auheke Track and the longer Western Ōkataina Walkway, which ascends over the hills above Lake Ōkataina and takes several hours to reach Lake Ōkareka to the southwest.

How to Get There

To reach Ngahopua Track, head south along Lake Ōkataina Road from State Highway 30 as it runs alongside Lake Rotoiti. The access point is located about halfway to Lake Ōkataina, directly opposite the turnoff to the Outdoor Education Centre.

Around nearby Lake Rotoiti, you can also explore the historic Hinehpu (Hongi's) Track at the lake's east end and the Okere Falls Walk at the northwest end.
