New Plymouth City Walk

New Plymouth

New Plymouth is located between Mount Taranaki and the northwest coast of Taranaki. It is easy to explore by foot or bike, with an excellent coastal track. Start from Paritutu, the big prominent rock that sits with the Sugar Loaf Islands at the end of the port.

If the weather is calm and you feel up for some adventure, you can climb up Paritutu for amazing views. It’s steep and there’s a chain to help on the second half.

After Paritutu, wander or bike as far as you like along the coastal path to the northeast. You’ll pass the port, New Plymouth city centre, art installations, surfing at East End Beach, and the stunning Te Rewarewa Bridge in Waiwhakaiho. On a clear day, the bridge lines up with Mount Taranaki for the perfect shot.

The attractive downtown along King Street and Devon Street, bounded by Queen Street and Gover Street, is also an excellent walk. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the remarkable Len Lye Centre on Queen Street, and the enormous artworks adorning the sides of several buildings are captivating. Many eatery options exist, including the restored West End Precinct opposite the Len Lye.
