Napier in Hawke Bay is best known for its art deco buildings around the city centre. The number of buildings reflects the massive destruction of the town by an earthquake in 1931. But the city of 66,000 is not just about art deco. There are plenty of other points of interest, both around the town and within a short drive or bike ride. A few of these are shown here.
Spot the Frank Lloyd Wright prairie design, one of the alternatives to art deco when the downtown was rebuilt in 1930. There is also a row of Victorian wood houses that survived at the fire's edge and raged after the earthquake, as well as the cool golden Kowhai flower statue.
Take an extended walk along the waterfront or head to the cafes and restaurants around the quays. Then there are the wineries, the wider bay down to Cape Kidnappers.
