During a trip to New Plymouth, we managed to get a brief glimpse of Mount Taranaki at sunset. The view transitioned from shrouded in storm clouds with rain-reflected sunrays to full-colour effects. It was not the ideal Instagram opportunity, but it was still worth it.
During summer, you can hike to the 2,518-metre mountain peak on the Taranaki Maunga Summit Climb (Northern Summit Route on Topo Map). It is popular to be there for sunrise. It is a 6.3 km, 1,560-metre climb that takes up to 6 hours to climb from the Nt Egmont Visitor Centre car park. You can stay at a hut overnight partway up to reduce the early morning hike time. Outside summer, mountaineering experience and ice and snow equipment are required.
