Exploring the Mangarākau Swamp
Located near Whanganui Inlet in the Golden Bay region of the South Island, the Mangarākau Swamp is one of New Zealand's largest surviving wetlands. This area is gradually being restored by the Friends of Mangarakau Inc, making it a fascinating destination for those with an interest in ecological restoration. The swamp is accessible via a short walk around the wetlands at the small hamlet of Mangarākau, providing an opportunity to experience its unique ecosystem.
Scenic Drive Through a Distinctive Valley
As you leave Whanganui Inlet, the road winds through a valley flanked by steep, rocky sides and cliffs. This distinctive landscape is interspersed with patches of grass and grazing sheep, while providing a rare glimpse of a clearly defined river-gouged valley in New Zealand. The Paturau River runs alongside the road.
How to Get There
To reach the Mangarākau Swamp from Golden Bay, take Collingwood Puponga Main Road north from Collingwood. Then head west onto Pakawau Bush Road at Pakawau. At Whanganui Inlet, head south around the inlet on Dry Road and continue west until you get to Mangarākau. The wetlands are located on the left, near the Paturau River.
