Mangamate is a gorgeous basic campsite managed by Ngāti Whare near Minginui and Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne. It is surrounded by a mix of exotic and native trees next to the Whirinaki River. In addition, there is a substantial 6-metre waterfall at the east end of the campsite, where the Otuwairua Stream drops metres down to the river. Soaking below the waterfall and in the river is safe, so long as the weather is reasonable.
Access to the campsite is by vehicle from Minginui Road, with a large sign marking the access road. There is a gare on the road partway down. Once at the campsite, you can fish for trout and swim in the river. There is also a toilet and shelter, with firewood for the barbeques scattered around the site. Otherwise, it is basic, with prices to match.
Ngāti Whare has closed the site for camping until October 2024. If you wish to check it out, contact the administrator at 07 366 5690 or admin@ngatiwhare.iwi.nz. Check the iwi website for information updates.
