The Maitai Valley Road follows the Maitai River valley about 10 km from Nelson to the Maitai Dam and reservoir. The valley is worth a visit, with several places to stop and hang out. This includes swimmable water holes and access to trails that climb up and around the Dun Mountains on the south side of the valley and Nelson. Some of these tracks are rugged, with climbs up to 1,100 metres.
In addition to the road, the valley can be accessed on a shared cycle and walking trail along the valley and river from Nelson. Head east on Nile Street from central Nelson to access the start of the road and trail.
