The Long Bay Nature Trail, a unique loop starting just below the Vaughan Homestead, offers a distinct experience. It is connected to the North Shore Coastal Walk / Te Araroa. However, the real charm lies in the magnificent mature puriri trees, arguably the best of the kind in the region.
Mature puriri trees also have a rather decrepit moth-eaten look because they have, in fact, been chewed on by the puriri moth larvae/caterpillar for up to 5 years. The moth can have a wingspan of up to 15 cm but only lives for a very short time to breed.
