Kerosene Creek

Rotorua

Kerosene Creek is a fun, accessible, free hot spring experience in a creek with native shrubs and exotic pine trees. From the car park, it is a short walk to the creek, where you can immediately step in for a warm soak. Alternatively, walk along the basic track to other access points, some of which require modest scrambling. There are two waterfalls, the first of which is small, but the second is about two metres high. This is also the most popular place on the creek, so it will be quite crowded when busy. When we visited, the car park was full. However, there was plenty of room along the creek, so don’t let this put you off.

The creek's brown, oily colour reflects the volcanic chemicals and grit in the water, which is perfectly safe. However, as with all natural geothermal pools, keep your head out of the water, as there is a small risk of amoebic meningitis, which can be deadly. Theft from parked cars has also been an occasional issue.

Kerosene Creek is located near Waiotapu, about 20 minutes drive from Rotorua. Take State Highway 5 east towards Maunga Kākaramea (Rainbow Mountain). Shortly after Maunga Kākaramea, you will see a turnoff to the east on Old Waiotapu Road. This may be poorly signposted and is easily confused as it becomes Waikaremoana Road on maps. The road is unsealed and rough, but the obvious parking area for the Creek is only about 1 km along the road. A toilet is the only service provided.
