The stunning Harataonga Loop Track can be found on Aotea Great Barrier Island. From the Harataonga Campsite, walk west to the tracks. There are two options: a one-hour loop walk through the regenerating forest and over the cliffs back to the campground or beach or a four to five-hour walk to the Whangapoua Campsite.
The longer walk takes some extra planning, but the loop is straightforward and superb. Very steep in places, it takes you over an old pā site with spectacular views up and down the coast. Ancient pohutukawa trees are a bonus along the coast.
