The extensive exotic Hanmer Forest is a feature of Hanmer Springs. It runs down the west side of the town and there are numerous walks and bike trails, so start by getting a trail map before you head out. A particularly pretty section is the Woodland Walk Recreation Reserve, on the side of Jollies Pass Road and just out of town.
Numerous exotic trees, some of which are relatively rare in New Zealand, are present, and there are great open spaces for picnics.
