Glendhu Station

Wairarapa

Turning left onto Glendhu Road from Pahaoa Road will take you across the River and up to the homestead at Glendhu Station. You can access the incredible beach north of the Pahaoa Riverhead from there.

If you intend to drive past the homestead, a 4WD will be necessary, as the road becomes a muddy track crossing fords and fields. At least, this was our experience after some recent and substantial rain.

Glendhu Station is not worth visiting in itself. It is another large sheep-grazing area, but it does give access to a little-visited and unnamed beach. A closed gate crosses the access road (the muddy track), and a sign asks visitors to log in and out. There are also details on fishing and shellfish quotas. From then on, I walked, but those with vehicles more suited to the varied terrain may pass through the gate and drive.

The walk to the beach from the homestead took a bit under an hour, though it may be quicker on a day with less mud. You track through grazing land, watched by cautious sheep, and end up at a steep, wild beach.
