Energetic Mine

West Coast North

Energetic Mine is high above Murray Creek in Victoria Forest Park. You can see where people simply threw their tailings over the edge. There’s a good view and plenty of relics from the mining days. The deep shaft is now collapsed, with bits of rusting mining gear lying around. Consider the effort it took to develop these mines in the 1860s and the forest's eventual reclaiming of everything.

You can park in Blacks Point on Franklyn Street and walk up Murray Creek Track from there. From Energetic, the track continues above the Inangahua River valley, but this section had been closed by a slip when we visited.
