Doctors Point is on Blueskin Bay, north of Dunedin. It is not especially well known but is a superb beach walk with several points of interest and beautiful beaches.
From Waitati, take Doctors Point Rd to the car park, going as far as possible. Once the tide is out enough, walk east around the coast below the cliffs to text, a headland with a historic pā site with great views. Immediately on the other side of the headland is pretty Purakaunui Bay.
Along the way to Mapoutahi, you walk through sea caves, past colourful cliffs and very attractive little-used beaches. The sand is some of the whitest you will see in the South Island. The beaches are quite sheltered and relatively safe for swimming.
Allow at least 2 hours for the return trip.
