Just as you enter the northern end of Arthurs Pass town from Candys Bend, there is a track to the Devils Punchbowl Falls. This is a relatively short walk through a typically beautiful beech forest to a 112-metre waterfall, one of the most spectacular and easily accessible falls in the Southern Alps. The last section is steep, but it’s well-benched with steps.
Over the road is one of the access points for the Avalanche Peak Track. If you are looking for your first peak to conquer (1833 metres high with a 1,100 metres rise from the town), this could be for you. But you need to allow for most of a day.
