Exploring Cave Stream Scenic Reserve
Located northeast of Kura Tāwhiti / Castle Hill and Castle Hill Village, between Porters Pass and Arthur's Pass, the Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is a popular stop along West Coast Road (State Highway 73). This area is known for its adventurous cave walk and stunning natural scenery, and is an excellent adjunct to the Castle Hill walk.
Walking the Tracks
The reserve offers two main walking options. You can choose to do the loop above the gorge, which provides a more manicured path, or venture down to Cave Stream and the cave's southern entrance. Although the track to the cave is rougher, the entrance itself is a rewarding sight. Following the stream northward leads you to a swimming hole, and continuing further will bring you to the cave's northern exit.
Cave Transit Adventure
For a more adventurous experience, you can transit the cave from south to north. Be prepared for cold, dark, and wet conditions, as the cave features several small waterfalls. Ensure you have the appropriate gear and take necessary precautions. The cave is about 600 metres long and takes about 1 hour. Information about the cave transit is available on a panel at the track's start.
Seasonal Wildflowers
In spring and early summer, the area around Cave Stream, like Castle Hill, is adorned with a mass of big daisies and other wildflowers, adding a burst of colour to the landscape.
Getting There
