Exploring Castlecliff Beach in Whanganui
Castlecliff Beach, located in Whanganui in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, is a striking black sand beach on the southwest coast of the North Island. Known for its rugged beauty, this beach is a popular spot for surfing and beachcombing. The 2-kilometre stretch is backed by dunes, providing a natural backdrop for a day by the sea.
Facilities and Access
The main entrance to Castlecliff Beach is via Rangiora Road, leading to a spacious parking area centrally located along the beach. Here, you'll find public changing facilities and toilets. During the summer months, a surf patrol ensures safety in this area of the beach. For those seeking a more adventurous route, Seafront Road offers access to several tracks that wind through the scrub-covered dunes.
Beach Features
Castlecliff Beach shares a common feature with other beaches along the Whanganui and Taranaki coasts: an abundance of driftwood and pumice. As you stroll along the shore, you'll encounter creative temporary constructions made from these natural materials, adding an artistic touch to the landscape.
