Exploring Bushy Park Tarapuruhi: A Sanctuary of Native Forest and Birdlife

Bushy Park Tarapuruhi is a captivating area of native forest located approximately 25 minutes from Whanganui. This sanctuary is an early example of fenced bird sanctuaries in New Zealand, with superb native bird life. It also contains several astonishing, enormous rātā trees, including the Rātānui tree. Managed by a trust established by NZ Forest and Bird in 1994, the park is now managed in partnership with the local iwi Ngā Rauru Kītah.

It is a superb destination, somewhat off the beaten track.

Accommodation and Picnic Spots

Adjacent to the sanctuary's car park, you'll find the large Bushy Park Homestead with bed and breakfast accommodation. The grassy area in front of the homestead is an ideal spot for a picnic, allowing you to relax and enjoy the rural view.

Walking Tracks and Natural Features

Behind the homestead is an area of native forest. In 2005, a predator-proof fence was installed to enhance the protection of native birds. The sanctuary features several short loop tracks that meander through the forest.

These trails lead you through a picturesque wetland and a mix of mature trees and regenerating forest. Among the highlights are the towering rātā trees, particularly the Rātānui, which stands over 43 metres tall and is estimated to be 1000 years old. Another nearby giant rātā is notable for the arch formed by its enormous roots.

Birdwatching Opportunities

Bushy Park Tarapuruhi is home to a diverse array of native birdlife, making it an exceptional spot for birdwatching. You can easily spot toutouwai, the New Zealand native robins, which are abundant and unafraid of humans. Tīeke, or saddlebacks, are also present, and several hīhī can often be seen around the bird feeders strategically placed throughout the park. In recent times, whiteheads (pōpokotea) and rifleman (titipounamu) have been added to the park.

How to Get There
