Exploring the A2O Cycle Trail: Twizel to Lake Ōhau

The A2O cycle trail from Twizel to Lake Ōhau offers a scenic and mostly flat ride, ideal for cyclists looking to enjoy the picturesque back roads and canals of the region. This section of the trail provides a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the southern end of Lake Ōhau.

Starting the Journey from Twizel

Begin your journey in Twizel by heading towards Glen Lyon Road. Follow this road until you reach the canal bridge just beyond Loch Cameron. This area is known for its stunning scenery, with views of the south end of the Ben Ohau Range. If time permits, hike up the hill above Loch Cameron for a panoramic view.

Cycling Along the Canal and Lake Ōhau

After crossing the canal bridge, continue on the north side canal road. This path will lead you to the edge of Lake Ōhau and the lake outlet. From here, an off-road trail takes you around the lake's foreshore, eventually connecting to the sealed Lake Ōhau Road. The final stretch of the ride is a 10-kilometre journey along this road to Lake Ōhau Lodge. Accommodation is available at the lodge.

Continuing the Adventure

The following day, the cycle trail links Lake Ōhau to Omarama, following State Highway 8. This extension provides additional exploration opportunities, with a climb up the side of the Ohau Range on the Tambrae Track and an optional visit to the Clay Cliffs.

How to Get There

To reach the start of this section of the A2O cycle trail, travel to Twizel on State Highway 8. The section starts from the town centre and follows Glen Lyon Road out of town.

Twizel has a range of accommodation options and wider access to the stunning landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin, Aoraki, Ahuriri Valley and Lindis Pass.
