Continuing on the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail from Lake Pukaki, cross the state Highway 8 to the purpose-built trail. Follow the trail across Pukaki Flats – an expansive area of dry big sky grasslands characteristic of the Mackenzie landscape.
This takes you to the town of Twizel, where you can stay overnight and enjoy a wide range of accommodation and food options. The following day, the track from Twizel to Ohau mainly follows Lake Ohau's hydro canals and the Lake Ohau shoreline.
