Exploring Neils Beach

Neils Beach is located on the West Coast of the South Island in South Westland, near the mouth of the Arawhata River. This beach is part of the expansive coastline stretching from Jackson Bay Ōkahu to the Haast River. It's an ideal spot for those seeking a remote and rugged beach experience, with the characteristic mix of sand, stone, and driftwood that typifies the region. The area is dotted with a few houses and cribs.

A Wild Westland Beach Experience

The beach at Neils Beach is typical of Westland's surf beaches: untamed and natural. Its wild nature means it is not patrolled, and the presence of few people makes it essential to exercise caution if you choose to swim. The beach's raw beauty is perfect for those looking to explore a less-travelled part of New Zealand's coastline.

Ngāi Tahu had a presence in the coastal region around Neils Beach and Jackson Bay over many generations. The mouth of the Arawhata River became a settlement site, with harvesting of kai moana and the gathering of pounamu (greenstone) from inland sources via the valley.

It was part of the area chosen by the government in the 1870s for a special settlement scheme, to attract immigrants to farm, log, fish and develop a harbour. A group of German migrants without farming skills landed around 1875, but the settlement largely failed, and many bandoned the area by 1879.

How to Get to Neils Beach

From Haast, take the Haast Jackson Bay Road southwest from State Highway 6. After crossing the Arawahata River, the road swings north and Neils Beach is signposted as it approaches the coast. Follow the short access road and park directly on the beach. While it is possible to drive further along the beach, doing so is not recommended unless you have a 4WD vehicle.

Other nearby activities include the Wharekai Te Kou Walk from Jackson Bay, the Lake Ellery Track, and the Hapuka Estuary.
