Mount Donald McLean Track

view from Mount Don McLean at sunset

The Mount Donald McLean Track in the Waitākere Ranges is a steep, short walk to the top of Te Rau O Te Huia (Mount Donald McLean), accessed from a side road off Whatipu Road. You will find it shortly after the road goes from sealed to metal. It can also be done as an extension of the Karamatura Track, part of the Hillary Trail Te Ara Tūhura.

From the car park, the walk goes up through forest to the top of one of the ancient volcanic peak remnants, 390 metres above sea level. There are a series of sharp peaks like this in the Waitakere Ranges, but this is the one of the few you can get to the top of. Views are exceptional, and sunset is amazing!
