Discover the Scenic Karikari Peninsula

Located on the northeast side of Doubtless Bay, the Karikari Peninsula is a stunning destination featuring twin horseshoe bays: Maitai Bay and Waikato Bay. Maitai Bay is home to one of New Zealand's most picturesque DOC campgrounds, making it an ideal spot for campers. Both bays are well-sheltered, providing safe swimming conditions.

Camping and Accommodation

The Maitai Bay campsite is beautifully set among pōhutukawa trees, harakeke, and native shrubs, with 100 campsites. For those interested in boating, you can launch a boat from the north end of Waikato Bay. While there is no immediate accommodation by the beach, holiday homes and other options are available at the northern end of Tokerau Beach in Doubtless Bay, just a 15-minute drive from Maitai Bay.

Local Hikes and Activities

The Karikari Peninsula has several enjoyable hikes. The Fig Tree Track leads to the southeastern headland of Waikato Bay. You can also hike to the northern headland of Maitai Bay or take a walk across to Karikari Beach on the east coast of the peninsula. These trails can also be extended and linked for those seeking longer walks.

How to Get There

To reach Maitai Bay from Mangōnui, take State Highway 10 west along Doubtless Bay to Inland Road. Turn north and follow Inland Road up the peninsula for 15 km, then turn left onto Maitai Bay Road and continue for another 5 km. The entrance to the Maitai Bay campsite is clearly signposted on your right. The drive from Mangōnui is 41.5 km and will take 40 minutes. From Auckland, it is a 4.5-hour drive.

You can also visit Ahipara at the south end of 90 Mile Beach, the Te Paki Dunes, Cape Reinga and Spirits Bay.
