Hāwea township is at the south end of Lake Hāwea. A walkway/cycleway, Lake Hāwea Track, runs next to and above the stony beach, which slopes down steeply to the lake in some places. There are several entry points to the track from the road. It doesn’t matter where you decide to stop by the lake; there won’t be many other people!
The lakefront walkway is also part of Te Araroa, which comes out on the east side of the lake on Timaru Creek Rd. The section in front of the town is about 3 km long and only takes about 45 minutes or so to walk. At the west end of the walkway, you can cross the road in front of the dam to connect with the Hāwea River Track. This is also a shared path that connects Albert Town and Wānaka.
