Lakefront Walk and Scenic Views
Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the sandy shores of Lake Taupō, accessible from the suburban streets of Parehopu and Hiuhiuawai. As you walk north along the lakefront, you'll encounter a playground, ideal for families. Continuing further, the mouth of the Kuratau River reveals stunning rock walls that rise dramatically from the water, offering picturesque views.
While the Whiowhio Track follows the Kuratau River, it is not directly accessible from the lakefront. This track provides an opportunity for those interested in exploring more of the natural beauty surrounding the river.
Getting to Kuratau
To reach Kuratau, travel to the southwest edge of Lake Taupō on State Highway 41. Take Omori Road all the way into the lakefront township. The lakefront is accessible from the nearby suburban streets, Parehopu and Hiuhiuawai.
From Kuratau, it is a short drive to Turangi, the northern gateway to the Tongariro National Park and the Desert Road.
