Discover Karamea Beach

Karamea, a small hamlet on the West Coast of the South Island, north of Westport, is a charming spot to unwind. It is the northernmost town on the West Coast and has various amenities, including camping and motel facilities, a couple of restaurants, a grocery shop, and a café. However, the highlight of this area is the nearby Karamea Beach, a stunning stretch of white sand that extends for ten kilometres. While exploring the immediate area, also keep an eye out for the "walking tree" - an ancient double-trunked rātā tree.

Short History of Karamea

Māori initially settled Karamea for its coastal resources, including the large lagoon fed by the Karamea River south of the town. The promise of farming and flax milling drew European settlers in the late 1800s. However, due to its isolation, accessible only via a winding road over the Karamea Bluffs, development has been slow, preserving the rugged, natural beauty of both it and the surrounding region. The flatlands around the town were cleared for farming, but the rugged hills to the east are still largely covered in forest.

Exploring the Unnamed Beach

Despite its impressive length, Karamea Beach is unnamed on official New Zealand maps. This expansive sandy shoreline offers a tranquil escape, often with few people around. When the photos were taken during the New Year, only one other couple was present, making it a peaceful retreat. Notably, unlike many other West Coast beaches, Karamea Beach was free from sandflies when we visited, adding to its appeal.

Best Time to Visit

Visiting Karamea Beach at sunset is particularly beautiful. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the sand and surf, creating a picturesque scene that is perfect for a leisurely stroll or simply relaxing and taking in the view.

How to Get There

Karakema is a 95 km drive north from Westport on the Karamea Highway (State Highway 67), taking 85 minutes and crossing the spectacular Karamea Bluffs. To reach Karamea Beach, take State Highway 67 west from Karamea and continue straight onto Aerodrome Road. Proceed straight again onto Flagstaff Road and follow it to the end, where you will arrive at the coast. This is a short 4-minute drive.

Other places to visit nearby include the natural arches of Opārara, Lake Hanlon and Kōhaihai and Scotts Beach at the south end of the Heaphy Track.
