Exploring the Inangahua Swingbridge
Located about 10 km southeast of Reefton, the Inangahua Swingbridge marks the beginning of the Progress Water Race Track. This area is steeped in history, as the tracks were originally created to reach gold-bearing reefs in the nearby hills and mountains. You can enjoy a scenic walk across the bridge and through this historically rich landscape.
Walking the Tracks
The Progress Water Race Track leads to the Big River Track, offering a 6-hour walk to the historic "Quartzopolis Goldfields" and an overnight DOC hut. For those interested in a different route, the area can also be accessed from Waiuta, which involves a 5-hour one-way walk. These tracks provide a look back into the region's gold mining past in some of the most remote areas of the South Island.
If you have limited time, crossing the swingbridge and taking a shorter walk into Victoria Forest Park is a great option. The track begins by ascending through beautiful mature beech forest, and the river itself offers picturesque views.
How to Get There
The Inangahua Swingbridge is approximately 10 km southeast of Reefton on State Highway 7.
Between Reefton and the swingbridge, you can also visit the historic mining area around Blacks Point. To the southeast on the highway is the Lake Daniell Track, Maruia Springs and the Lewis Pass.
