Exploring Cowin Road's Scenic Route

Cowin Road, located in the Whanganui Inlet area of Golden Bay, is a 20-kilometre stretch of narrow, unsealed road that winds along the coast between the Paturau River and the small settlement of Anatori. This remote road provides stunning views of the rugged coastline and beaches, making it a worthwhile journey for those seeking remote natural beauty. There is a freedom campsite at Anatori.

Scenic Views and Natural Features

As you travel along Cowin Road, you'll pass through rugged farmland and encounter breathtaking coastal vistas. The road also features patches of native forest regrowth, with beautiful groves of nīkau palms. There are several safe spots along the route where you can stop and scramble down to the beach, offering a closer look at the area's dunes and coast before reaching Anatori.

How to Get There

To reach Cowin Road, take Collingwood Puponga Main Road from Collingwood, then turn west onto Pakawau Bush Road towards Whanganui Inlet. At the inlet, the road becomes Dry Road for about 20 km, which takes you all the way to the Paturau River and the start of Cowin Road. Cowin Road continues past a ford on the Anatori River, extending a few more kilometres to the Turimawiwi River. However, the ford can be flooded, potentially affecting access.

Also in the area, you can visit the Kaihoka Lakes on the northeast side of Whanganui Inlet and take a walk to Lake Otuhie from Cowin Road. For the adventurous, there is an extra remote 3 to 4 hour coastal hike from the end of Cowin Road to Kahurangi Point, with accommodation at the Kahurangi Keepers House.
