Kura Tawhiti Castle Hill is south of Castle Hill Village on State Highway 73, the West Coast Road. This is a very popular walk with an obvious and large car park.
From the car park, it’s about a 1 km walk to the exposed rocks. Of course, the delight is the size and shape of the rocks. As you approach them, they look like crumbling castle ramparts or, in my view, like a series of rough giant's teeth. Other areas are jumbles of large stones. Wherever you look, there are points of interest and variation.
You can continue to wander behind the rocks and get to the top of some of them, with nice views over the valley and toward the Torlesse Range to the southeast. After this walk, you should still have time to visit the spectacular Cave Stream just north of Castle Hill Village.
A good time to visit is spring and early summer when there is a profusion of big daisies around the track and rocks.
